Sink Type Style Guide

April 20, 2018

Choosing a sink can be surprisingly tricky since it will be a prominent feature in your kitchen or bathroom and must combine both form and function. Best Plumbing is available to give you the lowdown on some of the most popular sink types to consider for your Seattle home. Keep reading to learn more!

Overmount

Also know as self-rimming, this model is a staple in sink design. Featuring a rolled rim that allows the basin to hang, suspended over a cutout in the countertop, overmount sinks are adaptable and non-invasive. Overmount sinks work with any counter material and can be replaced without making substantial changes to the supporting countertop. They’re also a solid choice when you need a sink to be installed quickly or are on a budget.

Wall-Hung

If you need a sink but don’t have room for a counter, you might consider a wall-hung basin. When installed, all the plumbing goes directly into the wall, leaving the floor space below the basin entirely clear. This option can save more space than any other sink type and is perfect for restricted spaces, such as the small bathrooms common in Seattle’s well-loved craftsman style homes or in micro-apartments.

Pedestal

Another popular, counter-free choice is the pedestal-style sink, where the bowel sits atop a supporting column atop a support column. It takes up more room than a wall-hung sink, but less space than a countertop model. Pedestal sinks generally have a timeless quality that works well with a wide range of different bathroom décors.

Undermount

It requires more plumbing know-how to install, but if you want to make a statement with a clean, modern look, consider an undermount sink. Everything is cut to fit exactly so the sink basin will sit flush with the counter edge. This means that undermount sinks are better paired with solid wood or stone countertops, as the edge surrounding the sink basin will remain visible.

Vessel

If you’re on the hunt for something unique, look no further than vessel-style sinks. With this design, the sink bowl rests on top of the counter. This allows for a lot of stylistic flexibility in terms of shape and material. Your sink could look like glazed pottery, carved wood, a waterfall, or any number of custom designs. This is a great option for homeowners looking for a sink with a lot of distinct presence.
