Installing a new electric water heater isn’t always as simple as swapping out the old unit. Depending on your home’s existing setup, the installation may require additional components or updates to support safety and proper operation.

What’s needed can vary based on the location of the water heater, the existing plumbing system, and applicable local requirements. Here are a few things that may be part of the installation process.

What May Be Needed for a New Electric Water Heater Installation?

The specific requirements for a new electric water heater installation can vary. However, homeowners may encounter the following safety components or upgrades as part of the installation process.

1. Proper Earthquake Strapping

Water heaters should be properly secured with approved seismic straps to help prevent movement or overturning during an earthquake. Proper strapping can also help protect surrounding plumbing connections if the unit shifts.

2. Thermal Expansion Tank

Some plumbing systems require a thermal expansion tank on the cold-water supply serving the water heater. As water heats up, it expands, which can increase pressure within the system.

An expansion tank provides space for that expanded water and should be properly sized and installed based on the plumbing system and manufacturer requirements.

3. Water Heater Drain Pan and Drainage

A drain pan may be installed beneath the water heater to help manage leaks and reduce the risk of water damage. Where required, the pan should be properly sized and connected to an approved drainage location.

The drain should not terminate in a crawlspace. The water heater’s location and existing drainage setup can help determine what type of drainage arrangement is appropriate.

4. Temperature and Pressure Relief Valve

A temperature and pressure, or T&P, relief valve is an important water heater safety device. It helps relieve excessive temperature and pressure inside the unit.

The valve must be paired with properly installed discharge piping. Relief valves and discharge pipes should never be capped, plugged, or otherwise obstructed.

5. Thermostatic Mixing Valve

A thermostatic mixing valve may be recommended to control the temperature of water delivered throughout the home and help reduce the risk of scalding.

It can also support proper hot-water temperature management. If installed, the valve should be properly sized, adjusted, and maintained according to manufacturer instructions and applicable requirements.

Why Does the Existing Installation Matter?

An older water heater setup may need updates before a new unit can be installed. What worked for the previous water heater may not be appropriate for the replacement.

A few factors that can affect the installation include:

  • The location of the water heater
  • The existing plumbing configuration
  • Drainage and water management
  • Existing safety components
  • Electrical requirements
  • Local plumbing and building requirements

This is why it’s important to look at the full installation rather than just the water heater itself.

Can You Install a New Electric Water Heater Without Making Upgrades?

Sometimes. If the existing setup is in good condition and already meets applicable requirements, fewer changes may be needed.

In other cases, an older installation may need additional safety components, drainage improvements, or other updates. A qualified plumber can inspect the current setup and determine what work is needed for the new installation.
