Restoring Water Service After a Major Underground Pipe Failure
When a multi-family residential property suddenly lost water service due to a significant failure in its aging underground water line, residents were left without a reliable water supply and property management needed an immediate solution.

The Challenge
Upon arrival, our project manager performed a site assessment and determined that the existing water service appeared to be the original galvanized piping serving the building. The pipe had experienced a substantial failure, resulting in a complete loss of water service.

The Emergency Response

- The point where the existing water service entered the building
Using these access points, our team installed a temporary section of new PEX water service line between the excavations, allowing water service to be restored while preparations were made for the full replacement.
This approach provided the property with an immediate solution while allowing the permanent work to proceed safely and efficiently.
Permanent Water Service Replacement
The following day, crews returned to complete the full water service replacement.
Work included:
- Removal of concrete and asphalt surfaces as required
- Excavation of the new service trench
- Installation of a new underground PEX water service line
- Placement of tracer wire for future line locating
- Installation of a new foundation penetration and service connection
- Installation of a new quarter-turn building shutoff valve
- Pressure testing and leak verification of the new water service
Once testing confirmed the integrity of the new installation, the excavation was secured and temporarily covered to maintain site safety while awaiting inspection.
Inspection and Site Restoration
After receiving approval from the local authority having jurisdiction, crews returned to complete the final phase of the project.
This included:
- Backfilling and compaction of the excavation
- Asphalt restoration
- Concrete restoration
- Final site cleanup and debris removal
The property’s water service was fully restored, and all disturbed surfaces were returned to service.
